LOS ANGELES — 3d Lacrosse has named Brian Kelly the Director of 3d Southland, the regional designation covering Orange County and the Greater Los Angeles Area of Southern California.

Kelly, who previously served as 3d Lacrosse’s Western Region Training Director from January 2014 to January 2016, returns to 3d after spending the last 14 years as a coach at Whittier College, a Division III institution located just outside of Los Angeles.

“It’s great to be back,” said Kelly, who in 2009 became the interim head coach at his alma mater. Following the season, he was named head coach – a title he then held for the past eight seasons.

In Kelly’s time as head coach, Whittier – the western-most NCAA program in the country – amassed a record of 60 wins and 49 losses, including a trip to the 2016 NCAA postseason tournament.

“It was a hard decision to leave Whittier, but I will always be connected to the Poets program and will always be an ambassador for it,” Kelly said.

“But this is an exciting step for me and my family. 3d Lacrosse has been an important presence in my career and the opportunity to come back to work full time with an incredible network of coaches always looking to raise the bar was something I couldn’t pass up.”

Kelly, who hails from Downingtown, Pa., was an All-American long-stick midfielder at Whittier before embarking on a professional lacrosse career that saw him play for the Anaheim Storm of the National Lacrosse League and the Los Angeles Riptide and the San Francisco Dragons of Major League Lacrosse.

As Director of 3d Southland, Kelly will oversee all aspects of the region’s operations, including Select team offerings, training camps, workshops and clinics. His connections to coaches throughout the country is expected to be a boon to players in Orange County and the Greater Los Angeles Area looking to develop their skills and advance to compete in college.

“I also couldn’t turn down the chance to take over the 3d Southland program and help build it and make a positive impact on lacrosse in Southern California,” said Kelly, who will be aiding in the transition at Whittier before moving into his role full time with 3d.

“3d Southland has picked up steam since its inception and already has some strong teams competing at national tournaments thanks to their hard work behind the scenes. I think there’s a lot of talented and dedicated lacrosse players here who want the opportunity to train and compete at a high level with a well-run machine like ours.”

Kelly was a longtime coach and evaluator at 3d Lacrosse’s STX Rising Showcase Series of training camps and events, previously known as 3d Blue Chip. He has worked extensively on the field and in the film room to help 3d Lacrosse refine its growing virtual library of lacrosse coaching instruction known as the 3d Methodology.

“We are pleased to welcome Brian Kelly back to the 3d Lacrosse staff – even though, in ways, it felt like he never really left,” said 3d Lacrosse CEO Greg Waldbaum.

“Whether it’s been serving as a coach for 3d Southland or traveling around the country to work as an evaluator at our STX Rising Showcase Series, ‘BK’ has managed to stay close to the 3d Family and stay tied to our vast network of coaches. So it’s terrific to see someone who has been so important to us coming back to a full-time capacity with the goal of helping us take 3d Southland to new heights.”

Waldbaum and 3d Lacrosse have heard loud and clear the call for world-class instruction and training opportunities for what is a lacrosse-hungry population of players and families in the Orange County and Greater Los Angeles Area.

“Brian’s knowledge of the game, his positive attitude, excellent teaching skills and experience as a coach will be a huge boost to our efforts in 3d Southland. The players and families there who want to get the best possible training and opportunities to play lacrosse in college will benefit immensely from his guidance. We’re thrilled to bring on a coach of his quality and look forward to watching him help elevate the quality of lacrosse and build its culture in our Southland market.”
